CARNEVALE! VENICE BEACH
2010 MASQUERADE
The colorful costumed festival,
inspired by the famed Italian Carnevale,
moves Indoors for a very private party!

The 8th
Annual Carnevale! Venice Beach, a costumed tribute to the famed
festival in Italy, will be held on June 5th, but in a break
with tradition it will not be on the street but at Mission
Control, a large private facility.
“We
want to keep the festival alive,” explained producer, Esquire
Jauchem, “but we encountered so many problems when we did it
on Windward Avenue last year that we had to come up with a new
approach this year. The audience loved the energy of the festival on
that street in the heart of Venice, but the finances do not work out
with the number of vendor booths we can fit in there. The City of LA
had earmarked a grant for us but then asked for the money back since
they are running out of funds this year.”
“In
addition, a resident of the street filed complaint after complaint
with the police and a merchant wanted to be paid thousands of
dollars for us to use the street. It just became more trouble than
it was worth to continue fighting all of these battles, especially
when we face losing money to do it. The private party this year will
be a benefit in the hope of raising funds to get the Carnevale back
next year as a free, public event”, concluded Jauchem.
Miriam
More, the producer in charge of talent added, “We will have a
costume contest, and performances as we have every year. We have
been a showcase for local talent over the years with over a hundred
performers on our stage each time. It will be scaled down a bit this
year, but it will be as crazy as ever, maybe even more so since it
is a private event for adults only! Fatfinger, Todd Spero,
and Diva Danielle will be spinning and the Harissa Belly
Dance troupe will make their annual colorful appearance.”
Brady
Walker, a producer and the MC last year explained, “We hope
to convince the County to let us hold this festival on the beach,
that way it would not interfere with parking and the noise would be
removed from the residential areas. They hold Carnevale celebrations
on the beach around the world, hopefully we can do the same thing
here.”
In
previous years the Carnevale! events have been held in a variety of
locations including The Waterfront Café, Windward Circle, Beyond
Baroque, and at the Canal Club. The popular street festival has been
produced since it’s second year in Association with the Venice
Chamber of Commerce and has been funded in part in the past by
the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Venice
Neighborhood Council. Carnevale! is a reflection of the
tradition originally started by the founder of Venice, Abbot
Kinney in the early 1900’s.
